Our little J is 2 1/2 going on about 32. Some days he’s a complete wreck of a toddler, but most he’s a sweet, crazy, talkative little dude who is growing up way too fast! Now that he’s got a memory that lasts longer than what happened 5 seconds ago, we’re hoping to start some family traditions that he can benefit from and look back on fondly as an adult.
For the advent season this year we’re starting our own Jesse Tree. You can google search and find about a jillion websites about it, but the basic idea is to make an advent calendar that tells the history of Israel, the heritage of Christ or the history of salvation. Isaiah 11:10: “In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.”
There are lots of ways to go about this, from real branches strewn with ornaments to garlands to something like what we’ll have. We settled on making a wall-mountable felt tree that is growing out of the stump of Jesse. We’ll add a new symbol mounted on a leaf every day of December, reading scripture and talking to J (and N!) about the significance of each story in God’s plan of salvation.
Here’s the bare tree. I’ll post pictures of the ornaments as I make them up. Let’s hope I finish by each day we need to hang them!
